Top 5 Trees to plant in the Denver Metro


This list is a selection of a variety of different types of trees that do well in the Western slopes of Colorado. The trees do well in high elevation and drier climates.


Bigtooth maple/ Wasatch Maple (Acer grandidentatum)-

This tree grows to 25 ft tall.

Why we love it: When you think fall you think of this tree. Its bright red leaves are a site to see and stand out against the typical yellow colorado fall colors.

Climate: This tree does well with dry climates and alkaline soils.


Cleveland Select Pear (Pyrus calleryana)

This tree grows to 25-35 ft tall.

Why we love it: Not only are these trees beautiful, but you get to enjoy the fruit of your labor year after year. This tree produces white flowers.

Climate: below 7,500' elevation


Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum)

This tree grows to 30 ft tall.

Why we love it: If you want a tree that requires little maintenance and effort then this is your tree. Its drought resistant and require very little water once established. It might need a trim because its blue-green foliage does get a bit shaggy at times.

Climate: Full sun preferred, 0-8000' elevation, various soils


Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

This tree grows to 70-90 ft tall.

Why we love it: Oaks are large and resilient. It grows about 1-3 feet per year when young. If you need a tree that makes a statement, provides lots of shade and privacy, then this is your tree.

Climate: Its long taproots make it resistant to drought and it does well with alkaline soils.


Western Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa)

This tree grows to 50 ft tall.

Why we love it: You will love this tree with heart shaped leaves and white flowers which bloom in June. It has strong branches that do well with Colorado winters.

Climate: Full sun, below 7,000' elevation
